Sampling and key tests for IS 798
From the BIS product manual for IS 798, which BIS officers and applicants follow for certification:
Sample quantity:Minimum of 500 ml
Testing against IS 798
Samples are type-tested at a BIS-recognised laboratory in India; foreign lab reports are not accepted. BIS then reviews the test report and documents and grants the registration. Market surveillance samples follow.
The test report has to cover every clause of IS 798 that applies to the product, in the edition current on the date of testing. When BIS revises IS 798 or replaces it with a new edition, existing licence holders move to the new edition by the date BIS sets in its notification.
How to get CRS registration under IS 798

- Submit samples to a BIS-recognised lab in India for testing
- Apply on the CRS portal with the test report, factory and brand documents
- BIS review and grant of the R-number registration
- Mark products with the Standard Mark, IS number and R-number
