BIS CRS guidelines, series guidelines and FAQs

The official documents that decide how CRS products are grouped, tested and registered, and the deadlines for revised standards, with a plain-English summary of each and a copy of the PDF.

Registration under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is governed by MeitY's Compulsory Registration Order and by guidance documents that BIS and MeitY publish on crsbis.in. The documents below are the ones we use most when planning a CRS registration. They set how many models one test can cover, which products are in scope, how IT and audio-video products move to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, and the deadlines when a product's Indian Standard is revised.

Every document is official. The summaries are ours. Where a document has been replaced or its deadline extended by a later circular, we say so and link to the newer one.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues the CRS series guidelines?

MeitY, which notifies the Compulsory Registration Order. MeitY's CRS FAQs point applicants to its series guidelines, and BIS publishes the files on its CRS portal, crsbis.in.

How many models can one CRS test report cover?

Usually up to ten models in a series, with the worst-case model tested. Some products allow more: up to 20 for sealed cells and batteries and for several LED luminaires, and up to 50 for fancy lights and chandeliers. The models must also meet the grouping criteria for their product.

Are these the original documents?

Yes. Each PDF here is a copy of the file published on crsbis.in, saved so that it stays available if the government link moves. Each page also links to the official source. The summaries on our pages are written by our team and are not official text.

What is changing with IS/IEC 62368-1:2023?

IT and audio-video products tested to IS 13252 (Part 1) or IS 616 are moving to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. Both standards can be used until 1 November 2028. Existing licensees must submit new test reports for every lead model by then.

Want us to plan your series?

Send us your model list. We'll group the models, pick the lead models and tell you how many test reports you need.
