Who needs it
Any manufacturer making UPS and inverters (up to 5 kVA) for the Indian market, and any importer bringing it in, needs the product covered by a valid BIS registration (CRS). Registration is granted to the manufacturer for a specific factory, brand and models. Overseas manufacturers must appoint an Authorised Indian Representative to apply and hold the registration in India.
Without it, the goods cannot be manufactured, imported, sold, distributed or stored for sale. Contravening Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016 can lead to imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine of at least ₹2 lakh (₹5 lakh for repeat contraventions) that can reach ten times the value of the goods, or both.
How to get BIS certification for UPS and inverters (up to 5 kVA)
- Confirm the Indian Standard and group models into a series
- Submit samples to a BIS-recognised lab in India for testing
- Apply on the CRS portal with the test report, factory and brand documents

Fees. Application and annual licence fees of ₹1,000 each, a processing fee of ₹25,000 per year, and ₹20,000 for each additional test report, plus lab testing charges (BIS Conformity Assessment Amendment Regulations, 2026).
Validity. Registrations can be granted for up to 5 years and renewed for further periods of up to 5 years, with fees paid annually.
