What this document is
On 13 August 2026 the BIS Registration Department issued a two-page note (reference Reg/ 2026/G-01) on which product category to choose when applying under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. It deals with two groups of products: wearable glasses, and extended reality (XR) products.
The note does not add new products to the order. It tells applicants which existing category, sub-category and product name to use.
Wearable glasses
The category depends on the most advanced feature. A camera decides between the camera categories, and a display seen through the lenses makes the glasses an XR product. The lower-level features may or may not be present.
| Glasses | What they do | Product category | Sub-category and product name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio glasses | Wireless connectivity, microphone and speaker for calls and music, AI voice assistant | Wireless Earphones and Headphones | Audio Glasses |
| Smart glasses (photo) | A camera that takes photographs only, with or without the audio features | Digital Camera | Smart Glasses |
| Smart glasses (photo and video) | A camera that takes photographs and video, with or without the audio features | Video Camera | Smart Glasses |
| AR or MR glasses | An overlay display seen through the lenses, with or without the smart glasses features | Extended Reality Products | AR Glasses or MR Glasses |
This table is our summary. The PDF has the full wording.
Extended reality products
For the category Extended Reality Products (Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality etc.), BIS lists five sub-categories, each with a product name of the same title:
- AR Glasses
- Other AR Devices
- VR Headset
- MR Glasses
- Other MR Devices
Separate licences
A separate licence is granted for each product name in both tables. Audio glasses, photo-only smart glasses, video smart glasses and each of the five XR product names therefore need their own licence, even from the same manufacturer.

XR products are tested to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. BIS’s XR implementation guideline of 9 March 2026 covers the move to that standard.
